Special Education Schools (SPED)
Central Auckland Specialist School opened in January 2018 following the merger of two well-established schools: Carlson School for Cerebral Palsy (founded 1954) and Sunnydene Special School (founded 1934). The school provides targeted teaching and learning for students with complex needs across central Auckland.
The school operates across multiple sites while awaiting construction of a new purpose-built facility. Services include specialist education programmes, satellite classes in local mainstream schools, and a successful Outreach service supporting ORS-funded students in their mainstream school environments.
Central Auckland Specialist School draws on decades of specialist knowledge and practices from both founding schools, offering expertise in supporting students with cerebral palsy and other complex developmental needs. The school serves students across a range of age groups, providing individualised learning programmes tailored to each student's abilities and requirements.
