Family Support
Mana Whaikaha is a government organisation dedicated to improving disability support services for disabled people, tΔngata whaikaha MΔori, whΔnau, and families throughout New Zealand. They champion the Enabling Good Lives (EGL) approach, developed in 2011 with the disability community to increase choice and control for disabled people.
The organisation provides comprehensive support including assessment and funding services, community newsletters, and connections to the disability community. They focus on empowering disabled people to be recognised as experts in their own lives and leaders in their communities.
Mana Whaikaha's approach is built on key EGL principles including self-determination, person-centred supports, and ordinary life outcomes. They prioritise early intervention with families and whΔnau, support mainstream service access, and provide flexible disability supports. Their services are designed to be easy to use and tailored to individual needs and goals across all life stages.
The organisation works to shift authority from 'the system' to disabled people and their families, supporting them to live everyday lives in everyday places with full social participation, employment, and community inclusion.
